New for June, 2008
Set amidst the natural
beauty of Culver Academy’s 1700 acre campus, the Global Studies
Institute’s Summer Seminar provides Culver students, faculty,
and guests with a gathering
place for interacting with thinkers, leaders, and visionaries
from all over the world. The purpose
of the seminar is to escape from our daily routines to reflect
on the themes of:
1) morally
responsible leadership;
2) the underlying values of society and culture;
and
3) the challenges
facing an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.
Inspired by an idea of Chicago businessman Walter Paepcke (1896-1960),
founder of
the famous Aspen Institute, the Global Studies Institute’s Summer
Seminar will become— “ a center of dialogue and
renewal, a place for lifting us out of our usual selves, as we
strive to
gain a greater understanding of our humanity.”
Along the shores of beautiful Lake Maxinkuckee, visiting scholars,
artists, and thinkers
will lead small group discussions. Designed to foster intellectual
growth, development, and reflection,
the lakeside sessions will provide Culver faculty and students
with the opportunity to
interact with some of the prominent thinkers of our time.
Visiting leaders will be a diverse group of men and women who have
gone well beyond
mastering their own areas of expertise to become knowledgeable
citizens of the world. Not an
academic seminar in the traditional sense, though, the Summer Seminar
will also provide our
guests, along with their spouses and children, the opportunity
to enjoy picnics, barbecues, swimming, sailing, horseback riding,
fishing, and golf.
The inaugural Summer Seminar of June of 2008, will feature
guest scholars from the international community.
