L-R Charles Phelps (CC);
Ari Grazian (GL); Guest Scholar Prince Cedza Dlamini of South Africa;
Alex Banfich (Ciel); and Barrick
Bollman (BA). All Global Scholars are in the
class of 2008.
The Global Scholars Program is a merit award, presented
each year by the Global Studies
Institute to qualified upper class students with a passion for
international affairs and a broad
knowledge of the world today. The application process involves
an essay and an interview. Selection
is made by an interdisciplinary panel of Culver instructors. The
Global Scholars will
be headquartered in the GSI offices on the ground floor of the
Huffington Library.
The Global Scholars help plan, organize, and implement
all GSI activities, including
global seminars; the “Culver @ the UN” program; work-study
projects abroad; the “Culver in
China” initiative; and the GSI’s video-conferencing
alliance, “The Global Network.” The students
also receive annual subscriptions to Foreign Policy and The
Economist.
With the creation of the “Global
Scholars Program,” the
Institute strengthens its commitment
to help students understand and analyze global issues, while
the direction of the Institute
increasingly becomes the responsibility of the students themselves.
