In a world of increasing globalism and explosive
growth in technology and communication,
the relationship between the United States and the People’s
Republic of China will be a key determinant
of world stability, development, and prosperity. The Global Studies
Institute’s “Culver in
China” program forges a historic partnership between the
Culver Academies and Shanghai Foreign Language School, in Shanghai,
the economic nerve center of the PRC.
Founded in 1963, SFLS is one of the leading college preparatory
institutions in the People's Republic of China. Affiliated with the prestigious Shanghai International Studies University, SFLS was established under the direction of the late Premier Zhou Enlai and General Secretary Deng Xiaoping. SFLS is a boarding school featuring an especially strong foreign language program, in addition to its other disciplines. With an equally strong emphasis on global studies, it has earned a reputation as being a cradle of foreign language professionals and diplomatic personnel. With an enrollment of 2,046 students at 7 different grade levels, SFLS also includes an international department which receives students from the United States, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Korea.
Culver's Academic Dean, Dr. Kevin MacNeil, led a delegation of 23 students and faculty to China in March of 2006. Other faculty leaders in the China delegation were Humanities instructors Ms. Marie Melroe, Dr. John Buggeln, and Ms. Jen Cerny. Ms. Ning Schultz, Chinese language instructor, also accompanied the group. The teachers stayed at SFLS, while the 18 students experienced home stays in Shanghai. The schedule included attending classes at SFLS; visiting the Shanghai Stock Exchange; touring BaoSteel (China's largest) and a new auto assembly plant. The delegation also spent three days in Beijing, visiting the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, among other historic and cultural sites. For further information on the China Delegation, see "Contact Us" on this website.
SFLS Delegation Visits Culver--October, 2006
A Shanghai Foreign Language School delegation visited Culver Academies in early October for six days on Culver's campus. The SFLS delegation (5 teachers and 15 upper-class students) attended classes; participated in Culver's Scimathalon Contest; observed various athletic contests and extra-curricular activities; and experienced boarding school life at Culver.
Day trips included a visit to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend; along with an intimate tour of Whirlpool Corporation's world headquarters in Benton Harbor, Michigan, where both SFLS and Culver students had the opportunity to interact with Whirlpool executives. The SFLS group included stops in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York City, before returning to Shanghai. "Culver in China" Project Director Marie Melroe accompanied the group to Washington, where they met Senator Richard G. Lugar, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and an honorary member of the GSI's Board of Advisors. Please see attached photos of Senator Lugar with Ms. Melroe, as well as the entire SFLS delegation.
Culver Sends Third Delegation to Shanghai--March 2007
Culver sent its third delegation to Shanghai in March of 2007. The Culver delegation of 15 students and 4 faculty attended classes at SFLS, visited BaoSteel Headquarters in Shanghai, and toured the PRC's capitol, Beijing, for two days. SFLS parents hosted Culver students for 3-day home stays in Shanghai, a highlight of the trip.
SFLS Second Delegation Visits Culver--October, 2007
The Shanghai Foreign Language School was on campus October 4th through the 16th.
The Academies hosted twenty students and six teachers. The SFLS delegation attended classes and participated in extracurricular activities. Also, Culver parents and alumni will hosted the twenty students for weekend-long home stays. Before returning to Shanghai, the delegation toured the University of Notre Dame and attended a training session in "innovative thinking" at Whirlpool Corporation's World Headquarters in Michigan. The delegation will also experienced the "world-class" atmosphere of Chicago and New York City before returning to Shanghai.
Further exchanges are planned for 2008, and a videoconferencing link has been established, providing the two schools with interactive communication on a daily basis. A robust Summer Program is also in the works, involving longer student, faculty, and alumni exchanges between the two schools.
We gratefully acknowledge the assistance and sponsorship of Dr. Cui Jian of Shanghai and Mr. David Filkins of Chicago, whose global vision and personal intervention have resulted in the collaboration between SFLS and Culver Academies.
